Licensed Paralegal Services in Scarborough & the GTA

Since 2007, Ontario has been the first — and so far the only — Canadian jurisdiction to license paralegals. Paralegals are independently regulated by the Law Society of Ontario, governed by the same Rules of Professional Conduct as lawyers, and authorized to provide legal services in specified areas. For many matters, a paralegal is both the most cost-effective and the most appropriate choice.

What licensed paralegals can do in Ontario

  • Small Claims Court for claims up to $35,000 — including debt collection, breach of contract, employment claims, property damage and consumer disputes.
  • Provincial Offences Act matters — including speeding tickets, careless driving, stunt driving and other Highway Traffic Act charges.
  • Landlord and Tenant Board representation — rent arrears, evictions, maintenance applications and tenant defence.
  • Summary criminal offences where the maximum penalty is six months in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.
  • Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal appeals.
  • Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario applications.
  • Administrative tribunals — including Social Benefits Tribunal, Licence Appeal Tribunal and others.

Traffic tickets and Highway Traffic Act charges

Most tickets in Ontario are resolvable below the offence charged — either by negotiating a lower-demerit alternative at the early-resolution meeting, or by trial. Even a few demerit points can mean a significant insurance increase. Stunt driving, careless driving and racing carry severe consequences including licence suspension and vehicle impoundment, and warrant urgent representation. We attend at the Provincial Offences Courts at 1530 Markham Road in Scarborough and 137 Edward Street in downtown Toronto.

Small Claims Court strategy

Small Claims is designed to be accessible but it is still real court. We prepare your Plaintiff's Claim or Defence properly, attend the settlement conference, draft and serve the right exchange of documents, and represent you at trial. For business owners, this is often the most cost-efficient way to enforce unpaid invoices and recover damages.

Honest scope from day one

Some matters need a lawyer rather than a paralegal — including most family law, indictable criminal offences and complex litigation. We will tell you at the first call which professional is right for your matter, and we have the in-house resources to handle either. Reach out for a free intake.
